Traveling in Portugal

A Week in Portugal: Marcello Santos

Fly to Lisbon. In Lisbon, you must stay for some days. Visit the city centre, the Bairro Alto, Alfama and some other typical places. Take one night, go to a restaurant and listen to Fado (our Portuguese traditional music). You must visit other villages around Lisbon like Cascais, Estoril, Sintra, Ericeira (you must eat near the beach. A nice Sea Bass or Dourada or Rodovalho). Sintra and Cascais for sure you must visit.
Then go north and visit Obidos (very near to Lisbon). Further north you must visit the old city of Coimbra (it's known for its old University). Go to the old city centre and loose yourself in the narrow streets and old churches with small typical restaurants and bars.
Go north again and stop in Aveiro. Beautiful city. I studied there in the university. Once in Aveiro, go near the coast and visit Costa Nova (10 minutes away from Aveiro). There you must eat fish with a glass of White wine or a good beer.
Go north and you get to Porto. My favourite city in Portugal. Walk near the river from the old centre Ribeira to the Foz. Cross the Eiffel bridge to the other side Gaia. There, you must visit the wine caves and if you have time, make a river cruise. Up the river where you can see the beautiful landscapes of Douro and the wine farms.
If you have time, you can go further north and visit the centre of the city Guimaraes. It's the birth town of Portugal.
